Network operators are changing the way they build their access services networks in an effort to deliver disruptive services and cutting-edge capabilities that will service 5G densification efforts well. The blue print for creating a best-of-breed broadband, backhaul and transport network has been to follow ONF Central Office Re-architected as a Data center (CORD) reference architectures. These open, disaggregated and SDN-controlled architectures or software defined access (SD-Access) architectures leverage data center networking principles and emerging access and transport technologies to enable rapid services growth and allow massive operational efficiency. 2018 has been a watershed year for commercial validation of highly disruptive Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter (CORD) reference architectures as leading network operators begin commercializing services using carrier-hardened versions of these open, disaggregated and highly-scalable CORD-based reference systems.
