Bio:Dr. Higa serves as the Associate Director of the Telecommunications and Social Informatics (TASI) Research program. TASI undertakes ICT-based research and community services in Hawai‘i and the Pacific Islands region. The program has three major initiatives: the Pacific Basin Telehealth Resource Center (PBTRC), the Pacific Health Informatics and Data Center (PHIDC), and the Pacific International Training Desk. Dr. Higa, is the Co-Director of PBTRC that is one of fourteen Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funded resource centers in the U.S. PBTRC provides technical assistance and program support for Hawai‘i and Pacific Basin communities to advance the development, implementation, and integration of telehealth including program development, education, training, tracking information on legal and regulatory issues, evaluation, business models, and strategic planning. A mission of PBTRC is to assist health care providers adopt telehealth and to increase access to health services for rural and vulnerable communities. Dr. Higa’s research interest is also focused on chronic disease management, the involvement of ‘ohana (family) and the engagement of telehealth solutions for increased patient support.
