Bio:Smith was retired at Hawaiian Airlines as Staff Systems and Avionics Engineer in 2020 where advanced satellite and airline data communication along with routine engineering. He obtained the satellite equipment and airtime grant that justified FAA certification of Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband for aircraft safety services introducing Internet protocols facilitating tracking aircraft and monitoring. He engineered Internet-connected electronic flight bags across three fleets. Dan teaches Office applications and business statistics at the University of Hawai`i. His interdisciplinary research interests include telecom policy, social media and satellite communication in remote areas. Dan was Telecom/IS/Avionics manager, Air Marshall Islands, where he installed the reservations data network including the first interactive data communication in Tuvalu and Kiribati. Prior positions include high school teacher, database programmer, and editor, Marshall Islands Journal. Education: PhD Communication and Information Sciences, University of Hawai’i Manoa; MA, Communication and BS, Physics, Stanford.
